Light whiskey
Since 1972 American law allows distillators to produce light whiskey. This means a distilled whiskey with a percentage not inferior to 160 U.S. proof, aged in used or new barrels, but not internally carbonized and bottled not less than 80 U.S. proof. The introduction of this measure was to slow down the importation of Scottish whiskey, preferred by the American palates because it is lighter than the traditional American whiskeys.
